It was our very first halloween trick or treating with diabetes and i have to say, Hudson did AMAZING!
My husband gave Hudson a bit more insulin after supper since Hudson gets his supper injection after supper since he is so unpredictable as to how much he will actually eat at that meal. So our plan was right after supper we would go trick or treating ( around 6:30)
After stopping by the church to play a round on their homemade angry bird slingshot "level" we parked in a well lit neighborhood and began our hour long trick or treating quest!
After about a half hour of running door to door Hudson was feeling a bit "hungry" so we gave him 1 aero bar since i knew the carbs in that treat and continued on to let the sugars settle in him.. after more running around he cracked open a mini bag of doritos and we were on our way. I am so glad we brought our wagon with blankets since he was getting a bit tired and so cold. I think the cold air combined with the small extra dose of insulin and all the running around AND the excitement dropped him enough so that he could enjoy a few little treats like all the rest of the kids he was running around with! My little angry bird was so proud of his haul when we got home and spread it all out to check to see if the candy was all safe.. He enjoyed half a mini size of candy corn and a sucker and than it was time for bedtime snack.. after checking his finger we thought for sure he would be in the higher range but he was a cool 7.7!!! EXCELLENT number!! we were so proud of him for recognizing his low when he "needed" candy and we were proud of ourselves for how we handled the whole candy holiday!
It seems like every single holiday where there is sugary yummy high carb content foods within reach that he is low and actually "needs" the cookies or chocolates to boost him back up to a safe range :) We had so much fun going out trick or treating with Tenley dancing and waving in the wagon and Hudson screaming trick or treat at the doors and than saying "Merry Christmas" as he left! SO CUTE! Lil Tenley had a blast on her first trick or treat run, holding onto a small box of smarties the entire 2 hours. Finally, she ate them as her dessert after lunch today and she is enjoying every last one. Its funny to think that she can eat as many smarties as she would like and I dont have to worry ( even though I am secretly counting her carbs in my head) its an odd feeling to just hand over a small box to your now 1 year old and not have to worry about what it will do to her besides make her a bit hyper. Her first time eating any kind of candy and she is taking a half hour to get through it... so cute!
Here are a few lil pictures of our night out and letting our little guy just enjoy himself and be a regular little kid!!!
Enjoy..
Tenley's First Trick or Treating experience.. I think she is in awe! |
