Day 3 of BlogFest : BLOOPERS!!
Ok, so since we are extremely new at this I had to really think hard about some kind of funny diabetes story. There are actually a few to choose from since our lil guy has a great sense of humour!
We had been treating a few lows recently and on one day we were really panicking and frantic like most of you are I am sure when your child is low.. We keep Hudson's Jelly Belly stash in a candy dispenser in the pantry. I sat calmly at our kitchen island feeding our baby as my husband was trying to figure out how to get the jelly Bellys out of the candy dispenser ( which was pretty funny to watch in the first place!) finally after a few comments from me " you have to push DOWN ... not up.. D - O -W - N on the handle" he finally got it but instead of having his hand out nicely to catch the Jelly Bellys they fell onto the kitchen floor.. not just one or 2 but maybe 10?? at least thats what I thought I saw fall from my hawk like vision :) And standing there was Hudson, watching this all happen.. and as the Jelly Bellys fell to our dark laminate floor he swooped in before anyone could stop him and literally shovelled them ALL into his mouth like it was his very last meal and his life depended on these Jelly Beans... SO FUNNY! He was literally shoving them in as my husband stood there in shock and as I was trying so hard to watch how many went into his mouth, which was hard to tell since he had hand fulls of them! Lucky for us 1 Jelly Belly is only 1g of carb.. but still, we couldn't stop laughing at how frantic he was to get ALL of them in his mouth before we cleaned them up!
Our second blooper - ish story is actually from the hospital. We were fresh and new at this whole new caring for a child with Type 1. Hudson was hooked up to a million ( or at least it felt like a million) different machines, all with so many beeps and alarms that would go off. So the day he was released from a couple of the machines and left only with his IV and IV stand was the ultimate day for him. Anyone who has a toddler will know that they are full of energy, sparatic and so unpredictable. So, imagine trying to run around the toy room on the Peds floor with a toddler who is still hooked up to his IV machine and trying to run and play.. not fun! One minute he is sitting so nice and still, playing cars on the floor, the next minute he is trying to run across the room as I am stumbling over all the tubes and wires, trying to keep up so that he doesn't pull out the line. I am thinking that that was when he decided that his IV stand needed a name. Why not? of course it needed a name. It slept in Hudson's room with him, this IV followed him around all day long. Why not give it a name as well!!! And what does Hudson call this IV stand?? "Scrawny Ronnie!" Scrawnie Ronnie was a hit! Hudson was less scared at night if Scrawny Ronnie was there with him, he let the nurses look under his "Tent" on his hand ( which was a half a paper cup taped and gauzed over his IV line so that it wouldn't get pulled out while playing and than the kids can't pull on it as well. Scrawny Ronnie was there when we celebrated Hudson's 3rd Birthday in the Hospital... even sporting streamer hair and a party hat. Of course, Scrawny Ronnie needed a face.. and for some reason he ended up looking kinda creepy, in my opinion... When Hudson got his IV line taken out, he begged for Scrawny Ronnie to stay in his room with him ( who was now sporting some antennas made from pipe cleaners and googly eyes, thanks to an awesome nurse, as well as a name tag!) Upon release form the hospital, we took Scrawny Ronnie's face with us.. maybe its more of a cute story than an actual blooper but hopefully it made you smile!
You can't really see his name tag very well.. but it says "Scrawny Ronnie the Robot" |
